Make Us Visible update on the inclusive history Bill S2547
This bill would require the teaching of Asian American, African American, Native American, and Latinx American history in all K-12 schools in New York State. The legislative session has come to a close this year, but the bill still has one more year to go. They hope to secure as many co-sponsors for the bill as possible before the start of the next legislative session. Please help by using the links on THIS PAGE to send an email to your senator, and also please share this with your board, community members, friends, family, neighbors, etc.

Act To Change: The Future of Allyship
On May 17, Act To Change hosted its annual Day of Action in NYC, centering this year’s theme: “The Future of Allyship.” The event honored the legacy of Vincent Chin and spotlighted the urgent need to end bullying and hate, especially for AANHPI youth, 1 in 3 of whom report facing discrimination in school. Highlights included the graduation of 18 Youth Ambassadors who led capstone projects on identity, bullying prevention, and mental health, and awards for changemakers, including Aya Hashi, The Sikh Coalition, HarperCollins, and actors Saagar Shaikh and Poppy Liu. The subsequent Empathy Expo showcased youth-led capstone projects and the work of partner orgs, including AAPI Youth Rising.
The Commission on the State of Hate
The Commission was established to assist California with monitoring, preventing, and responding to hate. Based on research, consultations with experts, and public input, the Commission recommends—on an interim basis at this time because the Commission’s work is ongoing—19 policies and three sets of tools to combat hate. This second Annual Report explains each recommendation along with the supporting evidence. It also includes a detailed review of the state of hate in California and a summary of the Commission’s key activities from July 1, 2023, through May 31, 2024.
Kudos:
Kudos to Mina for being featured in the SF Examiner alongside her mentor, Dr. Russell Jeung, in a story on the lack of Asian American history education, even in San Francisco. Mina spoke about the importance of teaching landmark stories like Wong Kim Ark, whose case protects birthright citizenship. See the news article here.
